This hardy whole wheat honey oat sandwich bread is sure to be a hit with the whole family! The whole wheat flour makes it heavier than white bread, still leaving it soft with a slightly chewy crust.

This delicious, easy whole wheat honey oat sandwich bread is a current favorite in our home. The whole wheat flour gives it a dense and hardy texture, while still leaving it soft and a little chewy. It slices easily and is not overly crumbly. This makes it perfect for sandwiches, even on the go. My boys love taking peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made with this bread for picnic lunches on homeschool co-op days! My personal favorite way to enjoy it is a turkey and cheese sandwich. Something about the sweetness of the honey combined with the savory turkey is just delicious.
Why you’ll love this recipe!
Quick and easy to make – By using a few simple whole food ingredients, this bread can be started in the morning and ready for sandwiches by lunch time.
Whole wheat flour – By using whole wheat flour, nutrients such as fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals are added to the bread. It is also better for digestion and gut health and has a lower glycemic index than white flour.
The addition of oats – Even the seemingly small amount of oats in this bread adds a bit of a nutty flavor, as well as giving a chewy and crumbly texture. Oats also contain fiber and several vitamins and minerals, adding to the nutrient content of the bread.
Versatile recipe – We love this bread with breakfast, toasted and topped with butter and honey. It is also a favorite to use for french toast. Another way we enjoy it is sliced for sandwiches. The slight sweetness from the honey makes it especially great for a turkey and cheese sandwich.
Ingredients
Milk – Whole milk is preferred.
Yeast – Active dry yeast is best.
Honey – I like to use local raw honey, but any kind will work fine.
Butter – Salted and unsalted will both work.
Salt – Redmond’s Real Salt is my favorite! Find it here.
Oats – Rolled oats or quick oats work the best.
Whole Wheat Flour – I like this one from Azure Standard.
All Purpose Flour – I use unbleached.
